The
very poor growth of the internal market, due to the reduction of
consumption, and the process of globalization that is given worldwide, has
orientated many Argentinean companies towards the exportation of their
products and we may emphasize on the increasing demand of fine wines.
Argentina is the country with major wine-growing surface, production of
grape, production elaboration of wines and the fourth world producer, after
France, Spain and Italy. Argentina steadies
itself as a great producer with available volumes for the world market.
They all look for quality...
The
wine industry began the process of transition towards quality. This with the
objective not to lose any more positions on the internal market before the
advance of other drinks, and to gain positions among the principal exporters
of the world market. The arrival of multinational investments (French,
Italian, Americans and Dutches) to the Argentine warehouses from the ‘90,
meant to incorporate near that $500 million in technology, management of
vineyards and warehouses as well as the necessary distribution networks to
export to Europe, USA and Asia. Very few warehouses stayed in local hands
(among others, Covisan, Bianchi, Goyenechea and La Agricola). It was not
simple for these groups to tie their production to the consumption trend
towards young wines, varietales (alone type of grape: malbec, cabernet
sauvignon or syrah), aromatic and easy to drink.
The
minor expectation of growing on the internal market (6 warehouses
concentrate 80% of fine wines) forced the small and medium butlers to look
for the international market. The strategy succeeded with the growth of 31 %
of the exports of fine wines in the first quarter of 2000. This generated
euphoria in the wine-producing sector and encouraged hundreds of small
producers to exchange common grapes for quality grapes for fine wines. Past
year, more than 100 warehouses were selling their wines abroad...
The wine regions:

Center West (Mendoza and San
Juan)
It
represents 91,45 % of the surface with vineyards of the country. Extended
from 29,5 ° to 36 ° of south latitude. The culture of the grapevine in this
region is realized in heights that overcome 500 meters on the level of the
sea
Northwest (South of Salta,
Jujuy, Catamarca, La Rioja and Northwest of Tucuman)
It is
a geographically wide region. It is located between 22 ° and 29 ° of south
latitude.
The
culture of the grapevine finds its better expression in the irrigated
Cordillera valleys, which heights ranges between 1.000 and 2.000 meters on
the level of the sea, such as Cafayate in Salta, Andalgalá and Tinogasta in
the province of Catamarca and Chilecito in La Rioja. It represents 5,48 % of
the surface of vineyards of the country.
Rio
Negro
It is
the most austral of all the Argentine wine regions and the one located in
minor heights. Unlike other regions of the country the wine culture
constitutes a secondary activity in the economy of this region and the
culture of the grapevine has decreased sensitively in the last years
Best known types of grapevine:
White wines:
Torrontes (only one entirely argentinean), Chardonnay, Chenin, Sauvignon
blanc, Semillon, Chablis, Tocai...
Red wines:
Bonarda, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, gray and black
Pinot, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo...
The
wine culture, from the year ' 90 up to date, has evolved very much. We are
at an ideal stage to compete with the entire world, have very good
technology. We take advantage of the flourishing stage (from ' 93 to ' 97)
where we could incorporate top technology, for which we could have obtained
products of very first quality to compete....
...
That’s why we have today, after last ten years, products of highest quality
to sell to the world...
So I
invite you to discover an internationally recognized product like the
Argentine wine, to enjoy it and promote it; it is one of our more valuable
treasures ...to be offered to the world!!!
