After an unhappy
tussle with a convent college nearby, Tunnel had to close down. Sad,
because this was the city's only official dance floor. Hyderabad had
almost gotten used to dancing in the aisles of crowded pubs when Tunnel
came back with a vengeance. This time around christened T2. Round Two -
Score One, Pub; Score Zero, Party-Poopers.
People who were
expecting something radically different from the old pub were
disappointed, but this was minor compared to the overwhelming relief of
having a discotheque close at hand. For the first couple of weeks of
its existence, T2 was packed solid.
One of the prime
attractions of the dance floor, besides the fact that it exists, is
that it is fairly large, the strobe lights are excellent, and, for the
most part, the music is decent. Pop is the norm here - a little bit of
commercial, trance, techno and hip-hop, with bhangra thrown in for good
measure.
Celeb-sightings happen pretty often, and T2 is also
where teenagers (with generous amounts of pocket money), socialites,
city models and call-center executives hang out. Wednesday is Ladies'
Night, which means women get in for free. There are also special deals
for MNCs (Fridays and Saturdays free entry) and students of ISB (free
entry; buy one drink, get one free).
Stags are not allowed in,
and it isn't uncommon to find a throng of them at the door, tentatively
approaching single females to accompany them in, while the doorman
pretends he didn't see anything. Bouncers are aplenty here, so there's
nothing to worry about.
Indi-pop artists and casts of Bollywood
films are known to perform here when they are in the city. Apart from
the dance floor, T2 also has plenty of room to lounge about in, plus
two rooms for private parties, one of which is furnished entirely with
beanbags.
But the only reason you'd go here is to dance. It
doesn't really matter what they're playing, everybody joins in
uninhibited and admirably un-selfconscious. Perhaps that's just the
comfortable ambiguity you'll find only on a dance floor.
